CHAPTER 4

Behavioural and Psychological Mechanisms Linking Depression and Heart Disease

Roy C. Ziegelstein and Mary Kate Elfrey

Department of Medicine, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Baltimore, MD, USA

Major depressive disorder is a global public health problem and a major cause of worldwide morbidity [1]. Of particular importance, depression is present in approximately 20% of those with heart disease [2–5]. Therefore, clinicians who provide care for patients with heart disease must be familiar with the manifestations of depression and have a heightened awareness of its symptoms. This is important because depression adversely influences the course of heart disease, and also affects all aspects of a patient’s life, including family and personal relationships, education, career, sleeping and eating habits, activity and overall general health.

Other chapters of this book focus in greater detail on the epidemiology of the link between depression and heart disease, and on biological, genetic and epigenetic factors involved. In this chapter, we review the behavioural and psychological mechanisms linking depression and heart disease.
